Care Providers
At the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine clinics, all care is provided by dental students or residents, who work in teams under the close supervision of faculty group leaders.
The group leaders are responsible for ensuring the quality and continuity of care that is given to all the School's patients.
All group leaders are experienced, licensed dentists, who are dedicated full-time to treating patients and teaching clinical skills.
Location
The School of Dental Medicine Clinics are located at 240 South 40th Street, Philadelphia, PA (at the corner of 40th and Locust Streets). The New Patient Admissions and Registration Clinic entrance is on 40th Street. (directions to the School of Dental Medicine). A limited number of patients receive care at our neighborhood locations. What to Expect at Your First Visit
When you become a patient at the School of Dental Medicine Clinics, we do a complete review of your overall health to determine your dental care needs. We will ask you to complete a medical history form and we will check your vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc.), perform a head and neck exam and an oral cancer screening, take a full set of dental x-rays, and conduct a dental screening. You should expect this initial appointment to last about 3 hours.
Following your initial visit, you will receive a call from your student-doctor, who will schedule an appointment with you to begin your dental care.
Hours of Operation
The School of Dental Medicine Clinics are open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, September through June 30. During July and August, the clinics are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Some specialty clinics may have slightly different hours of operation.) Appointment hours for the New Patient Admissions and Registration Clinic are at 7:30 a.m.,
8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Fees
Initial registration visit: $35, plus an additional $55 for a full set of x-rays (not required if a recent set can be provided).
Fees for dental care depend upon the treatment required and will be discussed prior to treatment, with your assigned dental student, at a subsequent visit.
Insurance/Payment Information
Payment for services or proof of insurance coverage is required at the time of treatment. All major credit cards are accepted, as well as cash and personal checks. The School of Dental Medicine accepts a large number of insurance plans. For more information, contact 215-898-5856.

New patients can generally receive an appointment for their initial screening visit within six to eight weeks of calling.

Special Information on South Street Bridge Reconstruction
Penn Dental Medicine is close to SEPTA bus, trolley, and subway lines. Exact change ($2.00) or a token is required. Fares are subject to change.
SEPTA Bus Routes: Routes 21, 30, 40, and 42 all have stops within three blocks of Penn Dental Medicine at 40th and Locust Streets.
Subway: Take the Market-Frankford line to 40th and Market Streets. Walk south on 40th Street for four blocks to the School at 40th and Spruce Streets; or transfer from the Market-Frankford line at 13th, 15th, or 30th Streets to the Subway Surface line.
Subway Surface (trolley) Lines: Take trolley routes 11, 13, 34, or 36 to 40th Street and Baltimore Avenue. Walk north on 40th Street for three blocks to Penn Dental Medicine at 40th and Locust Streets.
Reconstruction of the South Street Bridge is currently under way. The demolition and rebuilding of the bridge requires complete closure of the structure between Convention Avenue (still listed as Civic Center Blvd on Google Maps) and 27th Street, including the on- and off-ramps connecting South Street and I-76.
The University of Pennsylvania has set up a web site with special information on the South Street Bridge Reconstruction, providing details about navigating Penn's campus during the project.
For updated directions to Penn Dental Medicine, please use this Google Directions link. Click on "Get Directions" in the top left corner of the page, then enter the address of your starting location in the "A" field and 240 South 40th Street, 19104 in field "B" as your destination. Click on the "Get Directions" button to view the route.
30th Street Station - The station is a fifteen-minute walk from the heart of campus. SEPTA bus, trolley, and subway lines can be accessed from the station, and cabs are also available to take travelers the short ride to the Penn campus.

Emergency Care Clinic
The Emergency Care Clinic is open Monday through Friday for a limited number of new patients.
The emergency evaluation costs $45.00, and includes an examination and one x-ray. There are additional fees for treatment. Patients may be treated at the time of their visit, or may be scheduled for treatment at a later date.
If you are already a patient at the Dental School, and unable to contact your student dentist, emergency treatment is available in the Main Clinic, located in the Evans Building at 4001 Spruce Street, Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m., September through June and Monday through Friday at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the months of July and August. If your dental emergency is after 5 p.m. or during the weekend and you are unable to reach your dental student please call 215-898-8961 to be connected to our after hours emergency answering service.
The Emergency Care Clinic is located on the 2nd floor of the Robert Schattner Center, 240 South 40th Street. If you need to contact the Emergency Care Clinic staff during normal hours of operation, call
215-898-8965. If you are experiencing a dental emergency outside of the Emergency Care Clinic hours of operation, you should report to the nearest emergency room facility.
he Faculty Group Practice is a fee-for-service dental practice with fees that are comparable to other dental practices in Boston's Metropolitan Area. Payment for your dental treatment is expected at the time of your visit. The Faculty Group Practice accepts MasterCard, VISA and American Express. Experienced Patient Services Liaisons can help you to understand your comprehensive treatment plan and to coordinate your dental insurance benefits. The Faculty Group Practice accepts most dental benefit programs offered by Delta Dental Plan of Massachusetts and by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Our Patient Services Liaisons will also submit claims to other dental insurance carriers.
